What you can expect...
At Stone School, your child will experience cooperative play under the direction of a trained and objective teacher. Upstairs, we have a large room with several tables for daily arts and crafts projects, a sensory table, painting area, doll/kitchen area, quiet corner, and many games and toys. Songs, stories, and group sharing are done on our special blue rug. Downstairs, we have a slide, mats and toys for developing large motor skills, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen. Every child may take home books and costumes of their choice from the library and costume area. Your child's teacher sends home a monthly calendar which includes field trips, special topics, and other important information.
Classes Offered
Stone School offers a variety of classes to meet your child's needs and your schooling requirements.
Both the 3s and 3/4s classes are intended for first-time students. For the 3s class, the child should ideally be 3 when school starts in September, or shortly thereafter. In the 3/4s class, the child should turn 4 sometime during the school year. The 4s class is intended for children who are already or almost 4.
Our Pre-K program is an exciting part of a preschool program. Children whose birthdays fall later in the year may qualify for kindergarten, though they may not be ready for a formal kindergarten class. Our class is open to all children whose 5th birthday is during the academic school year and are looking for more than a "play environment.
Parents Role
Parents take an active role in the management and daily operations of Stone School. The unique quality of the cooperative nursery lies in the fact that you, the parents, and your child go to school together.
Your child goes to Stone School several times each week and you go only a few times each semester, but as each person interacts with the group -- the teacher, children and other parents -- the learning experience is shared. Each parent, like the child, adds something new to the group as a whole, whether it be a special sense of humor or the ability to fix a light switch.
Because Stone School is in the unique position of owning its own historical building, fundraising is a necessity and is part of your parental responsibility. There are many ways to do this, not only through the purchase of items sold at fundraising activities, but also by volunteering your time at these events.
