Infant care requires someone with both experience and training, and is a highly specialized type of child care. Many infant care providers will come right to the home, making it easier for the family and the baby. In these situations the care provider may require mileage or other compensation for the time and cost of transportation.

Infant care may be provided by hospitals and clinics for first time mothers. Typically this service involves a home visit a few days after Mom and baby are released from the hospital. Nurses or home health specialists will answer questions and give new Mom's ideas on caring for newborns.

An infant care provider should be current and up to date on child safety, emergency medical response for infants and CPR for newborns and small children. Although it is unlikely these skills will be needed it provides peace of mind to the family to know the caregiver is well trained in these areas.
